Energy bills will rise again in 2026. The main reason is the increase in energy tax on gas. Households that use a lot of gas and live in poorly insulated homes will feel this most in their monthly expenses.
The Dutch government wants to discourage the use of gas. As a result, the energy tax on gas will increase in 2026 from €0.70 to €0.73 per cubic metre. This may seem like a small change, but it can add up significantly for an average household.
While gas becomes more expensive, electricity will become slightly cheaper. The energy tax on electricity will decrease from €0.12 to €0.11 per kWh. At the same time, the fixed reduction on energy tax will be lowered from €635.19 to €628.96. As a result, households see only limited benefit from the lower electricity tax rate.
In addition, grid management costs will increase in 2026 by an average of around €25 per year for gas and electricity combined. This increase is due to necessary investments in the energy grid.
For many households, 2026 will therefore be another year of rising energy costs. Together, higher gas taxes, increased grid costs and the end of the net metering scheme result in higher costs. That’s why it's wise to take a critical look at your energy consumption, compare energy contracts and invest in energy-saving and sustainable solutions where possible.
