Our energy expert on current energy prices (June 2026)

Energy prices remain in flux. This is mainly due to tensions in the Middle East, around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. A significant amount of oil and liquefied gas is transported through this route to Europe and other parts of the world. As long as the unrest continues, energy prices for consumers are likely to stay high, although they are lower than during the peak in March.

Want certainty about your monthly bill, or is your contract expiring? Then a fixed energy contract could be a smart choice right now. You'll immediately benefit from a discount, and the chances of prices dropping significantly in the short term are slim.

Frequently asked questions

Read the frequently asked questions about comparing energy below. Is your question not listed? Then take a look at all our frequently asked energy questions or contact our customer service. We are happy to help you with all your energy questions.

When can I switch to a new energy contract?

You can always compare, request and switch energy. Pay close attention to when your current contract ends. Depending on the remaining term, you pay a termination fee or not. Does your energy contract have a fixed end date? Then you can apply for a new contract from two months before your contract expires. Is the end date further in the future? Then you do pay a termination fee when you switch to a new contract. Sometimes you can apply earlier. Check with us how long the new supplier is willing to wait for the expiry of your current contract. This way you always avoid a fine (termination fee).

Do I have to pay a fine if I apply too early?

If your current contract continues for more than two months and you already make an application, your new supplier may terminate your contract early. Then you do not complete the contract and you pay a cancellation penalty to your old supplier. You will also miss out on any cashback you would receive at the end of your contract.

How long does it take to switch?

Do you currently have an energy contract without an end date or that has already expired? Then you can specify a start date yourself. Your new energy supplier will then inform you of the final start date. Do you have a contract with a fixed end date? In the last two months of your current contract, you can make an application and your new supplier is obliged to only let you switch at the end of your current contract. This way you avoid a fine.

Do I have to cancel my old energy contract myself?

No, you do not have to cancel a switch yourself. Only if you still have a contract at another address, you have to cancel yourself.

Can I cancel my request?

Yes, you can cancel your request. After you have applied for a new energy contract, you will receive a confirmation from your new energy supplier within two weeks. In that confirmation you can read how to cancel the application. You always have a legal cooling-off period of 14 days after you have received the confirmation from your energy supplier. So, make sure you cancel the application within that period.

I have solar panels, what does this mean for my energy?

With solar panels, you generate your own electricity. You mainly use this electricity for your own household. There is a chance that you generate more electricity than you need yourself. You can feed this electricity back to your energy supplier. They settle the returned power with the power you have purchased from them. This is called netting. You will receive a feed-in tariff for the electricity that is fed in. With many energy suppliers, you now have to pay for the feed-in of electricity: the so-called feed in costs. The amount of these costs depends on the amount of electricity fed in.

How will my energy bill be structured?

An energy bill consists of several parts: the supply costs, network costs and taxes. These costs together form your total energy costs. Do you want to know exactly how your energy bill is structured? Then take a look at our example of the energy bill. There you will see an explanation of all parts of the energy bill.

Is it wise to fix my energy contract for several years?

Whether you need to fix your energy contract or not depends on your own needs. With a permanent contract you have security. You know exactly what you pay each month, but you are less flexible. If prices rise, you won't notice it. You benefit from the lower rate you have locked. A permanent contract is therefore advantageous. But a variable contract is advantageous if prices fall, because then you also pay less. If prices rise, you also pay more. You have less security, but you can switch more easily.

When is green energy green?

Green electricity comes from natural energy sources, such as the sun, wind or hydropower. Green gas is biogas that comes from organic waste. Because green gas is expensive to make, less of it is available. Many energy suppliers therefore offer mixed products made of green and grey gas or compensate for the CO2 emissions of natural gas.

Everything about energy

Comparing energy via Pricewise is very easy. With 1 click you can compare energy and get tailor-made advice. This way you find deals that you often can't get through the supplier itself. Thanks to our competitive rates, you save an average of € 341,- per year on your energy bill via Pricewise.

Comparing energy

Comparing gas, water and electricity

When it comes to energy, these concepts are often mentioned in the same breath: gas, water, light. Light refers to the power needed for lighting in the house. If you compare energy, you will see the costs of different suppliers for electricity and gas. Unlike gas and light, you can't compare water. In the Netherlands, every region has a regular water supplier. So you only have influence on the cost of gas and electricity. So you do not take out water in combination with an energy contract.

Compare power

If you compare energy, the costs of gas and electricity are compared by default. When comparing electricity and gas, the rates charged by energy suppliers per kWh (electricity) and per cubic meter (gas) are examined. More and more houses are no longer using gas. For example, because they are connected to heat networks via block or district heating. You can also only compare electricity with us. In the energy comparator you can indicate that you do not use gas.

Green electricity

In our energy comparator you can opt for an energy contract with green electricity. By filtering on 'green electricity' you can easily compare green electricity. This way you can be sure that your energy comes from sustainable sources. Such as wind and solar energy. You can also filter on 'Only green from the Netherlands'. In the energy comparison, you will then only see energy contracts with sustainably generated energy from the Netherlands.

Compare gas

It is not mandatory to purchase gas and electricity from the same supplier. However, this is usually the cheapest option. If you only want to compare gas in our energy comparator, enter a zero in the electricity consumption. In this way, we only compare contracts with gas. This way you can compare gas to see what the cheapest gas supplier is at your address.

CO2-compensated gas

In our energy comparator, you can also opt for gas that is sustainably compensated. When comparing gas, you then check the box 'CO2-compensated gas'. You will then only see the energy contracts with suppliers who compensate for the CO2 emissions of the gas. They do this, for example, by planting trees or purchasing CO2 certificates.

Compare energy prices

Energy prices in our energy comparator are always up-to-date and are partly based on our negotiations. We have a commercial partnership with most energy suppliers. This allows you to use our services free of charge. That is our revenue model. We are a completely independent organization. And our energy comparison site is therefore independent.

Saving energy

Be aware of your energy consumption. Saving energy ensures a better environment and a lower energy bill. Saving on your energy is easier than you think. A few small adjustments will go a long way. For example, turn down the heating a degree, shower a few minutes shorter and go for energy-efficient lighting. We have listed all the energy saving tips for you.

Compare variable energy rates

Energy companies change their variable rates every six months. On 1 January and on 1 July. Both the gas price and the electricity price. Variable energy prices depend on various influences on the energy market. Have you had the same contract for years or have you never switched? Then there is a good chance that you have a contract with variable energy rates. So it often pays to regularly compare energy providers and switch to a contract with fixed rates. This way you can take maximum advantage of a competitive welcome discount.

Compare business energy

You can also compare business energy with us. Do you use less than 150,000 kWh or 170,000 m3 per year? Then use our business energy comparator. Above this consumption, you need a large business energy contract. We provide various tailor-made offers for this.

Compare energy suppliers

At Pricewise you can compare contracts from a large number of energy suppliers. We give you a clear overview of our deals. We have an agreement with many suppliers, which often allows us to offer better rates.

Energy contracts and bills

Energy contract termination fee

Do you want to switch energy? Always take into account the end date of your current energy contract. If you switch before the end of your contract, you will have to pay a termination fee. You will also lose any welcome discount. If you have already received part of the welcome discount, you may even have to pay it back. Does your energy contract expire within two months? Then you can safely switch. The new energy contract will then take effect when your current contract expires.

About energy

Grid operators

The transport of energy is regulated by the grid operator. The network operator also maintains the gas and electricity network. Who your network operator is depends on the region in which you live. This is determined by law. So you cannot choose a network operator yourself. You pay the costs for the network operator through the supplier.

Energy consumption in the Netherlands

Your energy consumption depends on several factors. Such as the number of people in your household, the size of your house, how well the house is insulated, the appliances in the house, how economical you use energy and whether you generate electricity yourself. On our page about energy consumption you can see how much gas and electricity a Dutch household consumes on average.

Price differences between fixed and variable rates

When comparing energy, you can choose between fixed and variable rates. With a fixed rate, you fix the price. This means that you pay the same price for every kilowatt hour of electricity or cubic meter of gas during the term of your contract. A variable rate moves with the market and usually changes twice a year. If energy prices fall, you pay less. But when prices rise, you pay more.

What has changed in the energy market in 2026?

Energy bills will rise again in 2026. The main reason is the increase in energy tax on gas. Households that use a lot of gas and live in poorly insulated homes will feel this most in their monthly expenses.

The Dutch government wants to discourage the use of gas. As a result, the energy tax on gas will increase in 2026 from €0.70 to €0.73 per cubic metre. This may seem like a small change, but it can add up significantly for an average household.

While gas becomes more expensive, electricity will become slightly cheaper. The energy tax on electricity will decrease from €0.12 to €0.11 per kWh. At the same time, the fixed reduction on energy tax will be lowered from €635.19 to €628.96. As a result, households see only limited benefit from the lower electricity tax rate.

In addition, grid management costs will increase in 2026 by an average of around €25 per year for gas and electricity combined. This increase is due to necessary investments in the energy grid.

For many households, 2026 will therefore be another year of rising energy costs. Together, higher gas taxes, increased grid costs and the end of the net metering scheme result in higher costs. That’s why it's wise to take a critical look at your energy consumption, compare energy contracts and invest in energy-saving and sustainable solutions where possible.

More about switching

Why compare energy?

Have you been with the same energy company for years and are you therefore paying hundreds of euros a year too much? Chances are so. Switchers can count on extra low rates and one-off discounts. Do you want to know if you can save on your energy costs? No sooner done, you know. We are happy to help you compare energy. Fill in your details and view our best deals based on your consumption and wishes.

How does switching work?

Have you used the energy comparator and are you ready to switch? After you have submitted the application to us, we will ensure a smooth transition. After notification from your new supplier, you have 14 days to change your mind. After that, your new supplier cancels the contract with the old supplier and you have officially switched. When you move, you do have to cancel your old contract yourself.

Welcome discounts

Many energy providers offer a welcome discount. This discount is already included in the energy prices in the energy comparator. You often receive the welcome discount at the end of your energy contract. If you go for a 1-year contract and compare and switch energy every year, you can use a welcome discount every year. This welcome discount is often between € 100 and € 300,-. If you receive it every year, you will save a lot of euros.

Cheapest energy deal

Are you looking for the cheapest energy supplier? Which energy supplier this is depends on your energy consumption and the moment when you compare energy. And of course the exclusive discounts that suppliers offer. Compare energy and check what our cheapest energy deal is for you.

Pricewise

We arrange exclusive deals

We negotiate daily with suppliers to arrange the best energy deals for you. You often cannot get these exclusive energy offers from the energy providers themselves. By being number 1 at Pricewise, an energy company gets many new customers. The cheapest deals are always at the top of the energy comparator. So, a supplier has to give a lot of discount if they want to achieve the number 1 position. In this way, we keep the market sharp and remain an independent energy comparison site.

Structure of energy bills

The energy bill consists of supply costs and network management costs. Your supply costs are based on the energy rates, energy tax, fixed supply costs and any welcome discount. Network management costs are costs that you pay to the network operator via your energy company. You can find more information about this on our page about the structure of the energy bill.

Pricewise Energy Awards

Every year we conduct research into the best energy providers in the Netherlands. We look at customer reviews and pricing. With the Pricewise Energy Awards, we give you insight into the quality and price of energy companies. In addition, in this way we stimulate competition between suppliers and increase the focus on quality, service and price.
